Summer 2014 | | 71 N eglecting to shut your yap while a fellow golfer is about to tee off is universally considered a "douchey" move, but in Curaçao that sentiment couldn't be any further off line. In the island language of Papiamento, "dushi," pronounced identically to the disparaging North American slang, is a popular catchall term of endearment and one you'll be using to describe how sweet you are on the Pete Dye-designed Old Quarry GC once you've experienced her constant 360-degree scenic charms. (Tip: Be sure to arrive at your tee time fashionably early so you can tack on 10 minutes to your typical pre-round warm-up. That's because the range and practice area, which includes a putting and chipping green and a pair of bunkers, is a five-minute ride from the pro shop. You have to head back the way you came to get to the opening hole. It's a minor inconvenience but you won't be sweating the small stuff when you scope out the view from that first tee box.)
